International Day of the World’s Indigenous People, 9 August 2024

Today, Friday 9 August 2024 we acknowledge the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People. It recognises the first meeting the United Nations Working Group on Indigenous Populations held in Geneva, Switzerland in 1982.

Did you know?

🖤 Indigenous Peoples’ territories encompass 28% of the surface of the globe and contain 11% of the world’s rainforests. We are the guardians of most of the world’s remaining biodiversity.

💛 We speak the overwhelming majority of the world’s 7000 languages and represent 5000 different cultures.

❤ We are the inheritors and practitioners of unique cultures and Ways of relating to people and the environment.

Here in Australia, according to the most recent archaeological evidence, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have lived on this land for 65,000 years, making us the world’s oldest continuing living culture.
