Whooping cough, also known as Pertussis, is a serious infection that can cause a long-lasting cough, especially dangerous for babies under 6 months old.
There's been a rise in whooping cough cases in Queensland. If you or someone you know has it, you need to stay away from day care, school, or work until you're no longer contagious.
Try to avoid babies and vulnerable people, such as pregnant women, too.
Doctors diagnose whooping cough with a nose and throat swab. If you or your child have symptoms, see a doctor right away.
If symptoms get worse, especially if breathing becomes hard, go straight to the emergency department or call Triple Zero (000).
Antibiotics can treat whooping cough and prevent it from spreading.
The best way to stop whooping cough from spreading is to get vaccinated.
