What is COVID-19?

COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus. The virus spreads through water droplets that pass from an infected person through coughing, sneezing, or breathing. There is no current vaccine or cure for COVID-19.

Who can be affected by COVID-19?

Anyone can contract COVID-19. Most people will experience mild symptoms, however, if a person does have existing medical issues such as chronic respiratory disease, cardiovascular disease diabetes, or cancer, the virus could be serious or fatal.

How can we stop the spread of COVID-19?

We can take actions in our own homes and communities to stop the spread of COVID-19.

· thoroughly washing our hands with warm water and soap for 20 seconds, drying our hands using paper towels or a clean towel

· using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer

· social distancing: keeping 1.5 metres between each person (think two big steps)

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

Most common symptoms:

· fever

· dry cough

· tiredness

Less common symptoms:

· conjunctivitis

· headache

· loss of taste or smell

· a rash on skin, or discolouration of fingers or toes
